As a consultant and certified coach, I partner with individuals and organizations to achieve their personal and professional goals. Before launching Adaptive Roots Consulting in 2022, I spent more than 15 years in academic research and federal research administration, including serving as a 2015–2017 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow. My career has spanned plant evolutionary genomics research (2005–2015) and roles in science communication, planning, accountability, and change management at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (2015–2022). Upon relocating to Alabama in 2019, I realized I didn’t fit into a single professional box—so I built my own. Through Adaptive Roots Consulting, I: Support food systems change and nonprofit development. Help teams collaborate more effectively through workshop facilitation. Advise new and aspiring business owners. Provide one-on-one coaching to help individuals shape fulfilling careers. My business highlights have included: Serving as Interim Executive Director for the Alabama Sustainable Agriculture Network, leading strategic planning and executive recruitment. Facilitating a cross-disciplinary workshop for the USDA Agricultural Research Service's Salmonella Grand Challenge. Advising bioscience entrepreneurs in the Alabama Launchpad pitch competition. Delivering nearly 100 hours of career and executive coaching to clients from organizations including Southern Research, the University of Calgary, USDA, and the University of Memphis. I’m now based in Manhattan, Kansas, and work with clients nationwide. Stephanie received her PhD from the University of Georgia (UGA) Department of Plant Biology in 2013 and worked in a postdoctoral research position at the UGA Center for Applied Genetic Technologies from 2014-2015. She then made her way to a science communication position at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture by way of a 2015-2017 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship. Following this experience, Stephanie worked in strategic communication, program management, strategic planning, and change management as an ORISE Fellow at the USDA Agricultural Research Service. When her husband, Drew, was offered his dream job at the University of Alabama, Stephanie embraced the move to Alabama as an opportunity to begin the next phase of her career experiment and become an entrepreneur.
